EXECUTIVE PRODUCED: VICE’S BREAKING THE VOTE

I had the privilege of conceptualizing, developing and Executive Producing this groundbreaking series along with our host and deputy dc bureau chief Todd Zwillich. In this series leading up to the 2022 midterm elections, we traveled to Georgia, where election workers faced threats from angry voters fueled by right-wing media, we went to Colorado, where a qualified Republican local coroner was forced to fend off a primary challenge from conspiratorial activists inside his own part and we covered the “Stop the Steal” candidates running to control elections as secretaries of state before most of the news media knew their names and much more. We sat down with key officials from Facebook, Fox News and the White House to drill down on how a new breed of American authoritarians are using disinformation and false election narratives to cynically damage voters’ ability to meaningfully participate in their democracy and event travelled internationally for a look at how growing autocracies in Hungary and Italy are setting the stage for the next iteration of rule in America.

Breaking the Vote explored how “stolen election” lies have impacted Michigan candidates, and made one reconsider whether she can continue to live in the state. We sat down with one of the foremost experts in propaganda to decode for viewers how disinformation operates and can make voters unwitting participants. And VICE News correspondent Liz Landers traveled to  New Mexico, where a rural county commissioner refused to certify election results because of false theories about voting machines. Couy Griffin has since become the only public official in America to lose his office for participating in the January 6 insurrection.

The show ultimately took home the 2024 Webby for best Politics and Information News Channel.
